Training the next generation of clinicians and scientists is at the heart of our mission. We are seeking bright and creative individuals that will help lead the charge in developing and delivering state-of-the-art brain stimulation treatments.

With the support of the Sidney R. Baer Junior Foundation we are able to offer a world-class training program for fellows interested in practicing medicine and conducting research at the interface of neurology and psychiatry. This fellowship has a special emphasis on training in areas relevant to developing innovative new therapies using brain stimulation, or neuromodulation. Our state-of-the-art facilities, resources and faculty in these areas offer an exceptional training experience for future leaders in the closely related fields of neuropsychiatry and neuromodulation. The University of Iowa Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Fellowship provides 3 years of support to a qualified individual with a background in neurology or psychiatry where the trainee will develop skills in translational neuropsychiatry research that include formal coursework, clinical activities, independent research projects, data analysis, manuscript preparation,  grant writing and more. Fellows select a primary research mentor and work with a variety of leading scientists and physicians across neurology, psychiatry, and neurosurgery to provide a comprehensive training program. Upon completing the fellowship our trainees are well equipped to launch a successful academic career as an independent scientist or physician scientist in a tenure track position.

Educational Opportunities

For High School Students

We have had several high school students learn about brain stimulation and participate in educational experiences.

We offer a demonstration of TMS each year for the Iowa Brain Bee.

The University of Iowa offers a summer research program for high school students who want to gain exposure to neuroscience research.

Dr. Nick Trapp created a video presentation on careers in psychiatry.

For Faculty

We have a number of educational experiences for junior faculty members to develop research programs, develop a K-award application and launch their scientific career.  Many of these services are coordinated through the ICST. https://icts.uiowa.edu/workforce-development

We have a certification program in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
